Distinguished and Famous people from Alpha
Alpha's artistic connections reach from nineteenth-century watercolours to contemporary photography and performance. The town and the surrounding station country appear within the work itself.
🎨 Harriet Jane Neville-Rolfe
British artist Harriet Jane Neville-Rolfe travelled to Australia in 1883 to join family at Alpha Station. Over two years she painted daily life in watercolour, sending pictures back to England. Her subjects included station activities and Aboriginal people, preserving a particular visitor's view of the district during the colonial period. In 1964 her son donated 87 of these works to the Queensland Art Gallery. That collection gives a short stay a much longer life in the historical record.
🎨 Luke Roberts
Born in Alpha in 1952, Luke Roberts has worked across photography, performance, painting and installation. His art examines identity, religion and Australian history, sometimes placing his hometown directly in the frame. In the two-part photographic work The Spearing, one image shows Roberts in Alpha and the other features artist Richard Bell. The State Library of Queensland also holds his archive, including drawings for a local Alpha–Jericho logo: a practical civic commission alongside the more provocative gallery work.
